ICA President Pays courtesy visit to the Cooperative Movement of Uganda

On 15th & 16th January 2019, the cooperative movement of Uganda received a delegation from the International Cooperative Alliance led by the President Dr. Ariel Guarco paid a courtesy visit to the cooperative movement of Uganda
The President and the director general were welcomed at the airport by the Chairman UCA – Mr. Johnas Tweyambe together with General Secretary CPA Ivan Asiimwe and later they were received at UCA Head Office at Nkrumah Rd. Kampala where they discussed opportunities for strengthening cooperatives in Uganda.
The President Dr. Ariel Guarco was accompanied by the Director-General Mr. Bruno Roelants, the President ICA and President ICA -Mr. Japheth Magomere and ICA- Africa Regional Director Dr. Chiyoge Sifa.
At a meeting with the Chairman- UCA and General Secretary the visiting president tasted coffee from Ankole Coffee Producers Cooperative Union.
After the meeting at UCA, the delegates paid a courtesy visit to Uganda Central Cooperative financial Services UCCFS where they got to visit their new established Community Sacco aimed at providing affordable finances to the surrounding community.

During his meeting with the Speaker of the Republic of Uganda, The President appreciated the commendable job done by Parliament on tax exemption on Saccos. Mr. Roelants the Director-General also went on to add that issues mentioned by the General Secretary that’s taxation & Cooperative Bank are some of the global challenges ICA is addressing. He said that “it’s great that the Speaker has managed to work on them whilst focusing on the issue of development and that’s why we chose the next General Assembly to be in Kigali Rwanda.”
The General Secretary told the Speaker that “To realize the dream of becoming a middle-income status we need to develop the local content. We can do this through Cooperative Education and through ICA we plan to ensure that cooperatives are taught in Primary and Secondary education curriculum.”
At the Corporate dinner, the delegates met with member’s, strategic partners of Uganda Cooperative Alliance. During his speech, Mr. Charles Kabuga, a senior cooperator and also former General Secretary of UCA emphasized the need to invest in cooperative literature in order to preserve the cooperative identity and pass it on to the next generation. Whilst at the dinner, the President was given an appreciation award for the support to the Cooperative Movement globally

most especially the Cooperative Movement of Uganda.
On the second day, the President and the delegated held a meeting with the State Minister for Cooperatives Hon. Fredrick Ngobi Gume. The President expressed gratitude to the Minister for creating an enabling environment for Cooperative Development.

After the meeting with the Minister, the President visited Wazalendo Sacco a Uganda Peoples Defence Force Sacco which was established in 2013 mainly to provide affordable financing to their members and improve their welfare. Dr. Ariel Guarco thanked Brigadier Simon Ocan for the excellent work and also for giving people a possibility to improve on their standards of living.
